Before / after: an apartment of character, facing the sea

Before / after: an apartment of character, facing the sea

Perched on the hills of Liguria, in the medieval village of Verezzi, near Genoa, the apartment of 70 m2 is located on the top floor of a large stone house, partly restored. The architects Elena Belforte and Giusi Rivoira, from the Con3studio agency in Turin, have successfully built an apartment with a simple and natural style that preserves the authenticity of the place.

The owners of this family apartment, a couple with a teenager, wanted it to be not only thought of as a place for the holidays but that it could adapt to longer stays. Successful bet for both architects!

The renovation project in brief

The idea: Create a holiday apartment for a family by keeping the charm of the place intact.

The situation : Verezzi, Liguria, Italy.

Area : 70 m2.

The duration of the works: 3 months.

To preserve the character and elegance of the three existing rooms, with vaulted ceilings, the architects Elena Belforte and Giusi Rivoira, from the Con3studio agency in Turin, decided to keep the volumes identical and not to create clearances (hallways and entrance). Thus, one reaches the accommodation by the terrace and one enters directly in the living room, so as to pass from one room to another ...

In the largest room, a living room and a small open kitchen are located. They overlook a terrace where the view is spectacular. The rooms are furnished in the two side rooms. One of them was originally, occupied by the kitchen. The only bathroom communicates directly with both rooms. In all rooms of the apartment, the floor is covered with micro-concrete: it is a resistant and easy to maintain material, which gives uniformity to the apartment. The vaulted walls and ceilings of the rooms are whitewashed.

The living room has a new look after the architects

To respect the sobriety and sophistication of the site, the architects chose neutral-tinted materials such as lime plaster and micro-concrete - a composite concrete that mimics waxed concrete. It replaces the old tiles and is introduced with discretion and lightness. The ceiling is scraped and the original frescoes, very damaged, are left exposed. The French windows have been preserved, stripped but not painted to preserve the rustic spirit of the dwelling. Few things, the atmosphere is comfortable but refined. A Flexform sofa "Edward "Filled with cushions facing the French doors, a buffet of the 50s was flecked in a flea market, a carpet boucherouite years, 70 reported from Morocco.

Blow of young side kitchen and dining room in this holiday apartment

Entirely built and covered with micro-concrete, the kitchen is very simple. It harmonizes with the floor and walls covered with the same material.

On the dining room side, a piece of furniture made of masonry can store the dishes. The table and chairs were recovered and painted white.

Bright rooms designed as a cocoon

For this second home, the owners have chosen simple furniture, almost rudimentary, in agreement with the place. A niche in the wall is used as a wardrobe, a wooden ladder serves as a coat rack, large boxes are stacked and used to store shoes. Chairs replace bedside tables. The curtains are hanging on a big rope that replaces the clothes rail ...

In the master bedroom, a recovered wooden cabinet is used to store the clothes.

A terrace and outdoor patios where life is good

The large terrace on the top floor of the house has been insulated and also covered with a micro-concrete, but it is a more resistant version, suitable for outdoors. A dining area is set in the loggia, in the shade. The table is made with an 18th century oak top set on a metal stand, made by a craftsman. The unshaded area is equipped with deckchairs, to sunbathe or admire the view of the sea, the coast and Albenga, in the distance ...
