Exposing stones from the wall
Avoid falling into the pitfall of too much and clear only some walls. The smooth walls are also a few advantages: painted, they are easier to decorate and can easily hide the electrical ducts.
The first step in renovating the wall is to remove the old joint - even the roughcast that masks the stones - most often with chisel and hammer. It is therefore recommended to focus on laying bare the load-bearing walls. Thicker, they will be more resistant to repeated hammer attacks. Depending on the condition and age of the joints, the clearance work will not be the same. When old joints are easily removed or crumbled, they must be completely removed. If, on the contrary, they are still stable, they will be dug only 3 cm.
Once the old mortar has been removed, clean the support: scrub the stones and interstices vigorously with a damp brush to remove as much dust as possible.

Avoid moisture on exposed stone walls: bet on lime!
Recognized for his hygrometric regulation qualities, lime is a cheap traditional material that allows the wall to "breathe". Waterproof, a lime-based mortar is, however, vapor permeable; it allows the moisture to escape from the wall (if the wall is fragile, we can prefer a mortar lime-cement: the work will be reinforced, but we give up the breathable qualities of lime.)
The preparation of the mortar is quite simple: mix lime powder (proportions: between 1/3 and 1/4) and sand (white or gray, depending on the expected final color - between 2/3 and 3/4) with water. The mortar can be reinforced with adjuvants : antifreeze, plasticizer (improves malleability), water repellent (for a bathroom), dyes ...
The application of the mortar is usually done with a trowel by projection or slip. Use a pocket, just like cooking sockets. When the mortar is firmer, tamp it down and possibly reinforce it with a second load, the main thing being to fill all the gaps.
Once the grip is assured, brush the stones to even the joints and ensure a neat and durable finish.
