The terrace is a real living room of the house. And if you plan yours? First step: take care of the floor covering ...

Paved, paved, parquet or composed of several materials: it is the first choice to make for the floor of a terrace and probably the most important because it will stay in place longer than the furniture, renewable according to trends! On a small surface, the preparation of the ground and the pose mobilizes one or two weekends of an informed handyman. Many entrust this task to professionals, especially when it comes to working on the terraces of buildings, rich in constraints to respect.

Earth in the air

Like the carpet or the floor in the apartment, the floor of the terrace enhances the outdoor decor: a dark shade can reduce the direct reflection of the sun in summer, a light color brighten up the reverse shaded places. It should be noted however that on a building, it is quickly limited by the weight.

The slabs should be as light as possible, so not thick and large, to support a laying on studs without moving. These height adjustable pads are also used to connect the slabs together. Big advantage: the crawl space thus created makes it possible to pass the electrical ducts for the lighting and the pipes of the automatic watering.

Similarly the floor and gratings should be placed on studs to facilitate removal, if any. For any terrace on a building, it is better to turn to a specialist who will immediately check the tightness, often a plastic tarpaulin placed on a tarred surface ... Know, finally, that you will need to regularly clean the holes of water to avoid clumps of plant residues and soil, and that it is advisable to look in a corner.

Down to earth

In the garden level, the range of usable materials is extensive: reconstituted or natural stone, brick, slate or wood offer multiple possibilities. The choice of the covering will be made according to the facade of the house: one will seek either the perfect agreement - which facilitates the changes of scenery over the years - or the contrast effect emphasizing the development. The brick, for example, highlights all the wooden furniture, the warm colors and the plants with the country look.

If in the past we put the coating on a concrete slab, today, sustainable development requires, we let the rainwater seep into the ground under the terrace. So the soil remains alive and moreover the drying of the atmosphere in summer is less important. In areas with heavy rainfall, a drainage channel should be installed to direct the water to the edge of the terrace.

Slabs or floor

Once the drainage is in place, it is time to lay the soil. Slabs, bricks and pavers are placed when the ground is very loose on a bed of sand stabilized by an underlay of pebbles and chippings. Elsewhere, the soil is simply leveled and disbursed to a height corresponding to the thickness of the chosen coating and the sand bed.

It should be noted that the polymer gaskets usually used on draining soil remain permeable and very resistant to weather and weeds.

The installation of a wooden terrace also requires a flat and stabilized floor. The terraces in kit are installed on a geotextile felt preventing the grasses to push back and the wood to be in direct contact with the ground. The installation is then carried out on joists or PVC studs, adjustable in height.
