Hotel Alchimy updated by decorators

Jean-Noel Leblanc-Bontemps

The hotel Alchimy d'Albi has a new youth thanks to the decorators Pierre Dubois and Aimé Cécil of the publishing house Les Héritiers. The old Art Deco building has turned into a trendy little gem. Here are four lessons to reproduce this home decor.

For its first hotel adventure, the Miquel family has trusted the Heirs. Renowned for their achievements (the Strato hotel in Courchevel, the Chavant brewery in Grenoble), their publishing house and their collections for Roche Bobois, the decorators represent the legacy of good taste and French know-how, complemented by a certain panache. At the Alchimy, they were able to breathe a decorative spirit into the building while scrupulously maintaining the Art Deco façade. The courtyard, capped with a modern glass roof, has been transformed into a neoclassical atrium. The freshly colored walls have been decorated with neo-medallic medallions and antique engravings, rooms dotted with antiques, bathrooms dressed in Carrara marble. And behind the American bar open on the terrace, sits a backlit panoramic of the Pont-Vieux d'Albi and Sainte-Cécile Cathedral. With only one room, four suites and soon an apartment, the establishment, whose table is open every day, already has all the qualities of a very special hotel.

Lesson # 1: Set the scene

Brasserie side, padded benches in pale gray leather (2800 euros in 180 cm long), chairs "Lutecia" and armchairs "Gondolas" (811 and 986 euros, excluding fabric). Murano glass chandelier (24400 euros), all Les Héritiers. Tables with white marble top, Pedrali. Painting "Brick", Tollens, tiles Mosa.

The dining room, framed by staff columns and lit by a huge glass roof (Oxaris in Toulouse), looks like an antique atrium. The decor is reflected to infinity in the mirrors of the trumeau staff (company Nimsgern in Albi).

I want the same. I appeal to a decorator-staffer (staff-decor.fr, from 430 euros the smooth column of 2 m, 84 euros the marquee). The most beautiful effect also in a vestibule, on each side of a bed or at the bottom of a garden, for an atmosphere of ancient ruins ... Finally, I can put a simple ornamental marquee on the fireplace (staffdecor.fr, 143 euros approx .).

Lesson # 2: Hang a Medallion

In the corridor, the sweet harmony of the pink armchair "Surrey" and a medallion (1958 and 680 euros, Les Héritiers). Custom carpet with Alchimy logo, Balsan.

Adorning the mirrors of the Carrara marble bathrooms, a resin plaster medallion. New Guinea shells necklace on base, 285 euros, Les Héritiers.

At the reception, the mirror-applique created by the duo of decorators Pierre Dubois and Aimé Cécil for the Alchimy is now part of the Heirs' collections (1428 euros).

The medallions have invested the whole hotel: on the walls of the rooms, in the bathrooms [mirrors] ... We also find their oval shape, like a reminder of the skylights of the Art Deco facades, on some tables, on the back of the chairs "Lutecia" and around the wall lights.

I want the same. The medallions representing profiles of men and women are inspired by small old elements, enlarged and molded in resin plaster, a material that resists humidity in bathrooms (Les Hériters, 68 euros). They are glued to the wall or the mirror. For the wall sconces, the idea was to create a framed mirror of staff and fix a 3-light sconce. To make my own light, I frame a mirror and I pierce it with a special drill to put the wall that I hung. In my bathroom, I can also decorate my mirror with moldings staff (staffdecor.fr, from 16 euros).

Lesson # 3: Create a Funny Cabinet of Curiosities

Ceiling in staff boxes adorned with staff rosettes (Staffdecor) and glass flames (Le Bazar de l'électricité).

Jean-Noel Leblanc-Bontemps

In the hotel, the library has become a cabinet of curiosities revisited, a humorous pretext for decorators to repeat, in each backlit locker, the same composition: a parrot under a globe, an Indonesian mask and an ethnic vase (415, 298 and 115 euros, the whole Heirs).

I want to do the same. On my buffet, my console, or at the top of my wardrobe, I gather my old or modern trinkets and I organize them in scholarly composition. Or I mount a locker library (for example, the model "Kallax", 99 euros, Ikea) and I compose series of identical objects to play serial art.

Lesson # 4: Lay a Monumental Jar

Side Brasserie, on a base in orange lacquered staff, ethnic pot in trunk of palm tree, the Heirs.

Jean-Noel Leblanc-Bontemps

As at the Museum of the First Arts, a giant potiche carved in a palm tree trunk (The Heirs, about 700 € depending on size) sits majestically in the dining room.

I want to do the same. I place a giant jar in glazed earth or not (from 250 euros in garden centers) on the floor, to give a more raw look and avoid any risk of breakage. I can also install it in the bathroom or by the pool and store bath towels. Or I turn it into a fountain to decorate my little courtyard or my garden (pump for fountain on sale in all the garden centers). Or, in my entry, I put on a high saddle or a staff base (staffdecor.fr) one of the large ceramic vases of Pierre Dubois and Aimé Cécil for Roche Bobois. And I stick it, for more safety.
