1. Thermal stripping: the fastest

Under the effect of a "super hair dryer", the layers of paint and varnish soften. It is then enough to raise them gently with the knife of painter. Be careful not to scorch the wood ! GSBs offer heat scrapers (Bosch, 44.99 euros, Black & Decker, 44.99 euros). We can also rent (at Kiloutou, from 17 euros HT / day). For a neat finish, it is best to scrape or sand.

2. Chemical stripping: outdoors

Very effective, the method does not degrade the wood and does not change its color. A gelled solvent-based product is applied, allowed to act (between 15 and 45 minutes) and the paint is removed with a spatula. Then rinse with water, then clean with a rag soaked in alcohol or white spirit. Because they give off pollutantsChemical strippers must be used outdoors. They are sold in GSB, from the most traditional (special wood cleaner Syntilor, 0.4 l, 19.90 euros) to the more eco-friendly (biodegradable gel remover V33 multi-media, 1 l, 16.50 euros, stripper, Bondex, 0.5 l, 16.20 euros). Relevant option when the element to be stripped can not be rinsed: the professional chemical strippers (decapant wood without rinsing Decapex, 1 l, 19.30 euros). Once we have removed the paint from the support, just brush the product residues that have dried.

3. Sanding: watch out for lead

The method is effective provided that the layers of paint to be removed are not too thick. By hand or using an electric sander, we start by using a coarse sandpaper (type 80), replaced little by little by finer grained leaves. Attention, the old paint often contains lead. Also wear gloves, goggles and mask. And bring the dust to the dump.

4. Industrial stripping: the most pro

We can also entrust the stripping to specialists. Depending on the size of the object, they proceed by immersion in a solvent bath (for doors and shutters in particular) or microgommage (low pressure projection of a natural abrasive, preferred for furniture, small rooms or items that can not be moved). For stripping a door, count about 70 euros (20 euros per m2). Microgaming costs between 20 and 40 euros the m2.
