Buying Guide: The stove and the gas fireplace

Godin fireplaces

You wish invest in a heater that is both decorative and a source of savings. Good idea ! It remains to choose the fuel. Gas is the ideal fuel for who wants enjoy the warmth of an unconstrained fire. The gas fireplace removes all the obligations of storing wood or cleaning the fireplace of a traditional wood burning fireplace, and promises to enjoy a beautiful fire with ease.

For some time, gas heating is on the rise. Available in the form of a chimney or stovethis appliance is easily connected to the natural gas network, the installation must be carried out by an authorized installer. The fireplace can also be powered by bottled gas (propane or butane), but its use is then more restrictive: it is necessary to store and change the bottles. The device, which runs without electricity, is lit using batteries that produce the necessary spark.

By replacing an open chimney with a fireplace equipped with a glass door, the efficiency (share of heat restored) goes from 15% to more than 70%. The key is better comfort and a consequent reduction in pollution. According to the Agency for the Environment and Energy Management, an open fireplace emits 70 times more fine particles than a closed fireplace, mainly inside houses. In addition, the closed fireplace is a real complementary heating device, source of significant energy savings. Its heat spreads throughout the living room and surrounding rooms through natural convection, and its performance depends on its location and its power, the volume of rooms to heat but also the level of insulation of housing.

The advantages of a gas heating solution

Total control of fire and a great comfort of use are the main assets of the gas fireplace, ultra-technological device that is very easy to control thanks to a remote control. It is thus possible to switch on and off the fire without moving from the sofa, to adjust the power and the height of the flames, but also to program the temperature and the hours of operation.

Some connected devices are even remotely controlled from a smartphone or tablet. The "eco" mode can reduce power and gas consumption by 40%; the flames then drop in intensity. Side comfort of use, let's still mention the absence of soot and ashes, which avoids the tedious cleaning sessions. And no logs to carry either!

Some things to know about gas heating methods

Gas tends to radiate less than wood, which means that its spectrum of action is less wide. As for the heat emitted, it is softer and more regular, which can surprise when we are used to wood. For a better comfort prefer cast iron appliances, which keep the heat long after the fire goes out.

Another note of importance: with gas, the flames are lower and bluer than with wood. Then, for a "real wood fire" effect, the manufacturers propose fireplaces diffusing central flames, dancing over ceramic logs (one can also opt for a decoration of white pebbles or black ceramic chips). There are even glowing embers more real than life.

Rather stove or fireplace?

It's a decorative choice and a question of spatial planning, performance does not differ depending on the type of device. The chimney consists of an insert (casing made of cast iron) embedded in a formwork. All in length, the insert offers a panoramic view of the fire; modern and minimalist, it can also be vertical and have two or three glass faces for a surprising game of transparency. The stove itself is an independent device that installs near a wall or, more rarely, in the middle of the room, placed on the ground or suspended.
