Michel BUSSI

Philippe Matsas

In the footsteps of Michel Bussi, between town and countryside, next to Rouen. It is in Darnétal that resides for the last twenty years the new star of the French thriller. Where does he write? In music ? Silently ? We conducted the investigation, on the occasion of the publication of "Mummy wrong" at Presses de la Cité, in bookstores on May 7, 2015. Interview.

Michel Bussi teaches geography at the University of Rouen, but has become the 5th most widely read author in 2014 and the first French author of crime novels (source GFK).

When he does not prepare his lessons, he is found behind the keyboard of his laptop. Nomadic, Michel Bussi most often deserts his office; he likes to write among his family, in the huge living room of his 70s pavilion. If he likes to describe the habitat of his characters, at home, he feels very detached from these considerations.

Interrogation-deco in a messelic organized with a key index: his passion for books.

Your favorite room where you like to be and spend time?

Michel Bussi: The large living room, a living room-kitchen 50m2, where the whole family is found and everyone is engaged in its activities. Children do their homework, play ...

Where do you write your novels?

Michel Bussi: I do not have a specific place, as some writers can have their eagle's nest. Mobile with my laptop, I can write in an environment that moves in the image of my novels that are rooted in life. Being very quickly in my bubble, I take my ideas with me and I write most of the time in the living room or public places, often on the train.

And your books, how do you put them away?

Michel Bussi: I have a very compulsive relationship with the books, I store them: they accumulate without order, in the various libraries of the house. A little storage is necessary from time to time, to prevent them from breaking their faces. I also have a lot on my bedside table.

Your furniture: rather modern, ultra design, family, pitcher?

Michel Bussi: There is a dominant of natural wood furniture, rather retro. I am not very sensitive to the decoration: I have little taste for the choice of a color, a piece of furniture ... It is the affair of my companion and that arranges me. Paradoxically, I like to observe and guess people through their environment; I am interested in the places of my characters. But concerning me, I like to scramble the tracks and prefer to be above ground!

The most unusual or unexpected that can be discovered at home?

Michel Bussi: I have an impressive collection of copies of the "Little Prince" in about forty languages. They are stored in a furniture window that is in the entrance. I sometimes expose it.

An object or piece of furniture that you could not separate?

Michel Bussi: A big wooden chest that comes from my grandparents. I accumulate in bulk my memories and treasures. It contains a lot of me: words, letters, cards, a figurine of a birthday cake, my French copies of college years, ... I know that everything I put, I do not never separate.

A house in which you would like to live?

Michel Bussi: The valleuses, these large and beautiful villas of the 19th located at the edge of the Norman cliffs. They are spectacular with beautiful interiors, which I have described in many of my novels, especially in "Never forget". Their mysterious appearance and baroque architecture attract and inspire me.

The kitchen, rather open or closed?

Michel Bussi: Open on the living room.

A dish unexpectedly on the go for your friends? Your specialty?

Michel Bussi: I'm able to cook for the kids on weekdays, but I'm not the weekend cook who thinks about her ingredients and will cook a recipe for hours. In the kitchen, I'm the apprentice and I just order to peel ... Unannounced, I prepare a salad of raw vegetables made from tomatoes, cucumber, corn, with diced salmon or cheese.

Your favorite color in your home?

Michel Bussi: Pastel tones.

And the TV, which room?

Michel Bussi: A classic TV that mostly serves my six year old daughter. I look pretty little, except for a movie from time to time. The TV never purrs in the background.

Do you live with music or rather in silence?

Michel Bussi: The music reigns almost all the time. Thanks to Deezer, you can easily access all the radios and albums in the world. I listen to all kinds of music, mostly 70s-80s rock, folk, soul and French variety. This allows to vary the pleasures.

Curtains, doors, shutters? What does it inspire you?

Michel Bussi: There must be as little as possible. I remember that as a child, with my mother, there was the ritual of shutting the shutters every night. It never happens to me today. And besides, there are electric shutters. And otherwise, rather open door! As soon as it is beautiful, I like to be outside most of the time!

Your last useful or futile purchase?

Michel Bussi: A beautiful garden table to enjoy the terrace!

What is on your bedside table?

Michel Bussi: A bedside lamp, an alarm clock, magazines and books! The battery does not diminish fast enough ... I read at this moment: the Mechanics of the heart of Mathias Malzieu, Mal Stones of Milena Agus and the thrillers of Bernard Minier.

Do you dream of one more room? If so, for what purpose?

Michel Bussi: A large library: a room to put all the books and that would be a reading room. A contradictory dream because while I have an office, I work in the living room, like children who have a room and will eventually play in the living room. It would be for the pleasure of having it, without necessarily spending time there.

Rather orderly or messy?

Michel Bussi: I am a very orderly messelian, that is to say intimately organized with a form of efficiency in my brothel. Maniacs and procedural people get on my nerves. Ranger is a waste of time. For example, in my computer, I do not make subfolders, nor classifies the mails: I use search engines! I favor another form of efficiency.

Are you green plants, flowers, balcony, terrace, garden?

Michel Bussi: I'm happy to have a garden and a river, but I hate gardening and mowing. As a child, I was blocking these activities which were the worst punishment: I do not have in me this relation to the earth and to materiality. Even if sometimes, this kind of activity allows to let off steam.
