Raised storage spaces that give off the ceiling and the floor, high and low installations differentiated by their materials: the horizontality reinforces the axis of vision, from the entrance to the landscape.

Les Arcs values the pioneering impulse given by the architect and designer Charlotte Perriand. Carine Bonnot, cofounder of architecture firm Silo and author of a thesis on modern urbanism, presents the device set up by the station to preserve its heritage of the twentieth century.

Life cycle making, many alpine resorts are facing the aging of their housing stock. In what way is the Arcs approach original?

Carine Bonnot: The bias of the station is to highlight the pioneering impulse given by the architect and designer Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) to the designers of the station in 1968: a modernity and a design for all, integrating the built in the relief to give priority to landscapes. If the urban ensembles of Les Arcs 1600 and 1800 are now labeled, they have not escaped a natural degradation or renovation in a vernacular style. This is the hallmark of Les Arcs 1900, while Les Arcs 2000 was built for mountain athletes. To update the architectural principles of the origins, without betraying them, ADS, the local subsidiary of Compagnie des Alpes, which manages the ski area, called in multidisciplinary experts. Among them, specialists in urban planning of the Thirty Glorious and the renovation - which I am with my associates of the agency Silo -, but also researchers and artists, to think about the uses of tomorrow within the Agency Arcadian I coordinate under the guidance of the School of Art of Greater Annecy and the Savoie (Esaaa) and the School of Art Design Saint-Etienne (Esadse).

Constructed from 1971 to Les Arcs 1600, the "sharp" were designed by carpentry carpenter Bernard Taillefer. They frame the landscape according to the founding principle of the Arcs, by betting on a convenience and an economy of implementation.

How does the renovation of the Lauzières - the first shipyard delivered - reflect this renovation policy?

Carine Bonnot: As in Les Menuires or Serre Chevalier, it is carried by a property company created by the Compagnie des Alpes, which buys apartments, renovates them and sells them under the condition of commercial leases so that they can be rented. Because the depreciation of a real estate park harms an entire ecosystem, including ski lifts! Here, ADS has chosen a renovation in the rules of art of Charlotte Perriand, the form and substance: the needs of the user are central, which had jostled the architects at the time. In length, the cells have been kept identically, adding a partition so that the "refuge area" is akin to a real child's room: with a surface of 27 m2 for 4 to 5 people, it is necessary to modulate and pool the spaces.

Formerly a wooden block built into the living cell, the kitchen area now takes into account meals taken on site. Completing a work plan still functional but open, a table, fixed like almost all the furniture, is used for other activities. Another tip, integrate a shelf above the radiator to serve as a dryer-glove. With domestic comfort and household appliances, connectivity is another contemporary requirement, embodied by an apparent black tubular. Chosen for its solidity, the neighboring Corian with three-ply raw wood, as bare as concrete. From a budget constraint - or 700 euros per square meter, dishes and linen included-, as much make an aesthetic choice assumed.

Another jewel signed Charlotte Perriand, a "pointy chalet" renovated in an exemplary way by other architects received a distinction by ADS ...

Carine Bonnot: Initiated in 2014, this valuation of quality goods is judged collegially and participates in the requalification of the accommodation offer. Like other experts, I have endorsed the conceptual heritage of this renovation, its contemporary style, the functionality and durability of materials, as well as the feeling of well-being and the benefits of design. It is the extension of a dynamic to encourage private owners to renovate their interior. The service "Reference the Arcs" offers them a classification, a differentiating element with the tenants. After a free visit and a report, forums and catalogs allow them to meet selected artisans and companies. After 46 renovations in 2013 and 32 projects this year, the spiral is confirmed virtuous.

Delivered at the end of 2014, including furniture and tableware, the 2nd Lauzières building site will bring together 10 cells in five apartments with period bathrooms inspired by the liner sanitary fittings, signed by Charlotte Perriand.
