MINISTRY OF CULTURE FRANCE / AAJHL

While the colour is ubiquitous in the albums that the huge French photographer, Jacques Henri Lartigue, has been formed throughout his life, it has never been shown or exhibited during his lifetime. AT Lausanne, a polychrome dive exposes his personal and intimate universe.

"For me, life and color are inseparable (...) I have always been a painter. It's with my painter's eye that I see everything. "If his black and white shots made him famous, the colour represent a third of Jacques Henri Lartigue's production. An unpublished part of his work. The photographer captures simple and radiant happiness, where Florette often appears, his third and last wife. They are 27 years apart when he meets her, he falls madly in love, they will remain united 45 years. "I mistakenly take stupid photographs and my shadowless paradise seems invulnerable to me ...", the artist wrote in his diary, which numbered ten thousand pages when he died. This genius of black and white, passionate of new technics, was already photographing in color in the years 1910 and 1920. "When I was little, I was waiting the invention of autochromes (In 1907) impatiently, "explained Lartigue. This process marketed by the Lumière brothers suffers from the heaviness of the equipment and slow installation time.Lartigue will abandon it.Its autochromes remain rare, the exhibition shows some of them.

"Will they be able to obey me, these colorful photos, so new that we can confide all its illusions to them.Illusions to not lose anything, to catch everything and keep everything. All they tell everything? of the laboratory, will they be able to resuscitate snatches of what I see at the moment, I look, listen, breathe, and at bottom I know not, but I do not care to look at the bottom.
